Polymer Optical Fibers (POF), based on PMMA, are in wide use in automotive networks, automation and home networks. The biggest advantage compared with other cable types is the very easy installation. Disadvantages of POF are the limited temperature range and the relatively large bending radius. One possible solution is the use of multi core glass fiber bundles (MC-GOF). The present article shows experimental results for gigabit per second data transmission over a wide temperature range. The authors have successfully demonstrated the 1 Gbit/s data transmission over 10 m MC-GOF using a 850 nm VCSEL and standard electronic components over a wide temperature range between -40 deg C and +125 deg C. In many applications, the advantages of a small bending radius, high operation temperature and the use of reliable infrared lasers may overcome the disadvantage of the more complex connector technology. The authors don't see a substitution of the POF, but the chance for a meaningful supplement.
