Common rail injection has become an industrial standard for state-of-the-art diesel engines. It has been proven to be a tremendous step forward for all sizes of diesel engines from automotive engines up to the largest low-speed 2-stroke engines. In this environment, Wärtsilä RT-flex engines have become well accepted by shipowners. Shipowners confidence is being encouraged by the good operating experience with the growing number of engines in service. The combination of the common-rail concept and fully-integrated electronic control applied in RT-flex engines has further potential for future development. It gives the large degree of flexibility in engine setting and operation, together with reliability and safety, which are required to meet the challenges in future marine engine applications in terms of emissions control, optimized fuel consumption, insensitivity to fuel quality, ease of use and-, operational flexibility. Such benefits are already being seen in the latest developments with Low-Load Tuning and compliance with more strict NOx emissions control measures. These measures will involve various combinations of modifications such as changes to the turbocharging system, adoption of the latest generation of high efficiency turbochargers, more efficient scavenge air coolers, adjustment of engine tuning parameters, and further optimized fuel injectors. For RTflex engines, the flexibility of the common-rail system will be employed in adjusting exhaust valve operation as well as fuel injection system parameters, including the application of injection rate shaping.
