Energy availability, environmental impact, fuel price and legislation combined with shifts in customer buying preferences are driving significant interest in the development of fuel-efficient powertrain technologies. Advanced propulsion technologies are critical to developing sustainable transportation options for the future. The General Motors strategy involves multiple technologies to deliver the expected fuel economy improvement and to support energy diversity. A key element of the strategy is the electrification of the automobile, aiming to reduce fuel consumption and emissions and to increase energy security and diversification. The introduction of hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) represents the first stage of the electrification development, followed by plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (E-REV) and ultimately transgressing into hydrogen fuel cells.
