The majority of today's hybrid vehicles feature power-split and parallel drive concepts that are installed in the front of the vehicle instead of the conventional drive. However, accommodating new hybrid components in the available space in the vehicle takes a great deal of effort, in particular if a hybrid vehicle is being developed in the passenger car category. There are special challenges in front/transverse installations, because the spacing between the chassis rails of the vehicles is usually predefined. Frequently, this means only small internal combustion engines can be used or else major modification work to the engines and gearboxes is required. One possible solution for countering the package restrictions in the front of the vehicle is to use an electric drive on the rear axle. In this regard, it is possible to imagine a drive system for a hybrid vehicle in which the electric drive mainly uses the installation space provided for an optionally available, conventional 4-wheel drive system. This paper presents a hybrid concept of this kind. The system functions are described using simulation results as well as results from road tests. In addition, the system properties are considered in comparison to a 1-shaft parallel-hybrid drive.
