Within the European project FRIENDCOPTER, workpackage 5, DLR has been successful in developing and whirl tower testing an active twist model rotor blade. The active twist is generated by Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) actuator segments that are integrated into the lower and upper blade skin. Individual actuators on both sides of the blade are grouped as pairs, with each pair separately controllable. To analyze interaction effects between the blade dynamics and an active twist control, two different simulation models have been derived whereas both approaches are able to capture the effects of a segmented active twist control. The paper presents a detailed validation of the simulation models using whirl tower test data. It is shown that considering the blade dynamics for the application of an active twist control, an increase of the blade tip deflection can be achieved.
