Small satellites in low orbits usually need a data downlink antenna. In order to achieve a high data rate, X-band is often used for these applications. Traditionally, an isoflux coverage antenna is used. It has a circularly symmetric radiation pattern shaped in such a way that the power flux density over the earth is the same everywhere, regardless of if the user sees the spacecraft in a zenith position or just above the horizon. Such antennas can be based on several realizations, such as a waveguide aperture, a bi-cone, an array, or a reflector antenna. These are normally relatively large and heavy. In order to achieve a smaller, more lightweight antenna, it is developed a compact helix antenna concept. This antenna features an innovative design ofthe radiator. It is combined with a septum polarizer, and, when needed, small conical or corrugated parts for additional beam shaping, creating a modular antenna system. While reducing the size and weight compared to the traditional antenna types used, the new antenna retains the characteristics of the traditional design, large bandwidth, and relatively high power handling capability.
