In this paper, the value of multi-attribute balancing in support of the design process has been demonstrated based on two industrial scenarios. The first scenario demonstrated the value of combining hybrid/test/CAE simulation vehicle modelling technology for early chassis road noise evaluation, allowing to balance handling & road noise performance in an early design stage. Often the requirements for vehicle handling & ride comfort/road noise performance are conflicting, and therefore AOEM have a strong interest in considering a balancing methodology between those attributes as early on as possible in the development process. A process is developed to support early balancing between handling, comfort and road noise. To support this, the handling models are converted to an equivalent road noise suspension model, while adapting the road noise vehicle model for a road noise predictive range. The handling model is run against its targets and a procedure is implemented in which the handling indices are automatically calculated from the multi-body simulation responses. The road noise model is run under tire patch displacement excitation input and the relevant road noise spectrum at passenger seats is monitored. The parameter sets that can be varied in an optimization process are changes to hard point locations (connections suspension/body) (possible in early phase) and mount stiffness variations. In the second scenario, a realistic procedure for spot weld layout-optimization for optimal durability & NVH performance has been established. By using FE-based durability evaluations, a process has been developed to test multiple spotweld lay-out configurations for durability, while maintaining a certain pre-defined NVH performance. This allows to reduce the number of spot welds, while meeting the design targets in terms of durability & NVH, which means a great saving in the production costs.
