In this paper, a design method of a semi-active suspension control system developed to improve the ride quality of a vehicle is described. The control method is based on a nonlinear control which restrains the vertical motion of the sprung mass by the linear H infinity control with a compensation scheme for both nonlinearities and dynamics of a damper by a backstepping technique. In this research, in order to improve the ride quality by minimizing the jerk of sprung mass, a semi-active suspension control method compensating the nonlinear dynamics of a real damper is developed. The effectiveness of the control method is demonstrated by carrying out the full vehicle simulations and the actual vehicle experiments. Furthermore, the control method is compared to a conventional semi-active suspension system based on the skyhook control with a road surface assessment algorism.
