It is difficult to capture much information during experiments on ballistic events involving fabric armour systems. Most work in the literature involves V50, or pass/fail style, testing and then attempts to deduce the dominant mechanisms throughout the event from this limited information. Using a novel projectile tracking system, the authors have developed a new methodology for analyzing the early response in a ballistic event. The authors present results for the response of a fabric system (Kevlar 129 840d 28x28 tpi) when struck by 3 gram, 5.56 mm diameter, right circular cylinders. The authors show that material response can be decoupled from global effects if captured early enough and that final system behaviour is linked to the onset of the impact event.
