This paper deals with the question of how much the electrical distribution network capacities (feeders) for non-flight relevant loads can be reduced towards the actual power demand of the loads connected to it, in order to save aircraft weight. A fault tree approach as identically used in system safety analysis has been applied to identify a guide-value for the repetition of so-called under-capacity scenarios. This guide-value, which is referred to as repetition rate, allows under-capacity scenarios to repeat in average approximately every 11000 flight hours per feeder. As long as this value is met, the electrical system will comply with aircraft fleet reliability. Based on this rate it seems that approximately 40 % of the maximum achievable weight savings are possible. This network reduction has to come along with a power management which e.g. keeps the respective protective device of every feeder from tripping off during these under-capacity scenarios. If only the above 40 % weight savings are pursuit, the power management function can be very simple. If more weight is to be achieved, the power management function must become more complex. Any more complex power management should allow at least another 40 % weight savings.
