Corrosion sensors have the potential to provide large cost savings to aircraft owners by enabling condition-based maintenance. Despite this great potential implementation has been slow, primarily due to the complexity of a challenge involving such diverse topics as maintenance drivers, aircraft design, sensor design, corrosion science, modeling, data processing, and electronic communications. Stronger interdisciplinary R&D teams are therefore required for successful implementation. Sensor systems are getting very close to enabling condition-based maintenance at a fleet level. The complexity of the challenge has, however, historically led to an inadequate definition of the problem. This, when combined with sensor developers not familiar with all the issues involved, has led to many incomplete efforts to date. Implementation of sensor systems will considerably benefit from a better definition of the problem, along with an interdisciplinary approach that includes the aircraft maintainers, aircraft manufacturers, and sensor developers on the same development team. Additional steps that can speed the implementation of corrosion sensors include: 1) common DoD procedures and data formats for sensor evaluations, 2) data/information sharing hubs for sensor developers, 3) apples-to-apples comparisons of sensor approaches, 4) demonstration platforms and projects for qualifying approaches and quantifying cost benefits, and 5) integrated sensor technology roadmaps for key organizations.
