Presently, alternative cost-effective and lightweight countermeasures for reducing the interior noise of railway vehicles with a low-frequency are required. Therefore, the authors have developed a new type of noise reduction system to reduce the transmitted noise through a plate by fixing noise reduction panels consisting of thin plates, piezoelectric elements and control circuits. By employing an inductance circuit as a control apparatus, a resonant circuit is installed between the capacitor of the piezoelectric elements and the inductance circuit. It follows that the transmitted noise can be reduced in the frequency range near the resonant frequency. In this paper, we describe the noise reduction system and applications such as the ceiling panels under the pantograph of a railway vehicle and the enclosure of transformer. The conclusions are: (1) The authors have developed a new type noise reduction system with piezoelectric elements. The proposed system has a capability to reduce the low-frequency transmitted noise in an economical and lightweight manner. (2) The noise reduction system, which applied to the ceiling panel in the area of the pantograph in a running Shinkansen vehicle, reduced the noise by up to 4 dB. (3) When the noise reduction system was applied to the outside wall of transformer, the peak of the 200 Hz decreased by about 7 dB, and all passing value was reduced by approximately 3 dB.
