The paper presented engine management based on structure-borne sound. The first section looked at the attribute system for real-time-capable definition of combustion variables. Smoothed Pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution was used to illustrate the relationships between cylinder pressure attributes and structure-borne sound signals in the time and frequency range. After extracting combustion and injection attributes, models were produced for obtaining good results when estimating the combustion variables for engine management. Implementing the attributes system and modeling were then followed by actual operation of the combustion control system. There were no significant differences between structure-borne sound and cylinder-pressure-based control of the COHR position for the selected operating points. The diesel rating was introduced to assess the nuisance factor of diesel knock and included in the structure as a control variable. To this end, the nuisance factor of airborne-sound signals was modeled from structure-borne sound signals. Modeling was based on a variation of engine speed and load. Good results were obtained with modeling the diesel rating from structure-borne sound signals. Noise control was then integrated in engine management; the complete structure-borne sound engine management was then successfully implemented and compared with cylinder-pressure-based operation. Combination of different attributes from the structure-borne sound signal provides the engine control unit with information about the noise, the injection system and the combustion process so that it was possible to develop new strategies for controlling the diesel engine.
