In this paper a method to estimate the vertical forces applied on axles of a tractor-trailer vehicle is presented. This on-board estimation is developed by the use of low-cost sensors and the introduction of sliding mode observers and exact differentiations. An original variable gain observer is introduced so that the explicit model inversion is avoided. The estimated forces are then compared to simulator data in order to provide a validation of the method. As a perspective, the method is to be tested on a real instrumented truck and the estimated vertical forces are to be used in developing active steering and suspension systems with the focus to enhance vehicle safety and also to reduce damage to pavement caused by important load transfers.
