The power electronics components for the all-electric drive train are mainly the motor inverter and in future of more interest additionally a power DC/DC converter. The previous development of automotive power electronics happens in parallel to the development in industry and wind applications. Specific automotive progress was generated by optimization of reliability at higher ambient temperature and component volume and weight, respectively. Over the last decade a volume and weight reduction for motor inverter of a factor of about 2.5 was achieved. To reach cost efficiency for customer acceptance in electrified vehicles a major change is needed than the trend lines let expect. It is stated here that a corresponding technology leap can be realized by a paradigm change from concentrated to distributed system topologies. The relevant key technologies could be available in near future if the right line of development will be taken. But mastering the new demands of distributed systems like high switching frequency, steep current and voltage slopes and fast communication at the cost target for large-series production will be the new challenges in power electronics.
