Commercial rape seed oil-derived biodiesels, a commercial gas oil and their mixtures were combusted in a test engine at 2250 rpm and 3000 rpm to study composition of the off-gases. The pure biodiesel showed the lowest carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions but the highest nitric oxides emission. The nitric oxides emission decreased with increasing engine speed and increasing real power of the engine. Use of a pure biodiesel was of an environmental advantage. The CO and hydrocarbon emissions were by 30% lower than those in case of the gas oil.
