In air combat target identification can be established by the image processing of the electro-optical or optronic recording of the targets shape and contour. A realistic identification procedure may be based on the calculation and comparison of a very small number of target chracteristics varying with the aspect angles under which the target is recorder. THerefore, before identification, the aspect angles have to be known with certain accuracies. The problem is solved by application of an instationary Kalman Filter processing the radar measurements of the target to estimate position, speed and acceleration, from which the aspect angles can be calculated. The results of computer simulations show that this approach is successful with respect to optronic target identification.
