A hybrid electric power system has been developed for use in a midi bus application. This paper describes the system and the development of a computer controlled test facility. The diesel engine is mechanically connected to an hydraulic pump via an air operated clutch. The belt drive directly connects the output from the four disc armature motors to the engine drive shaft. The hydraulic system comprises a single pump and motor mounted independently, and the battery pack provides the energy store. The system is described in detail by Watson. The power system has been modelled on a software package produced by Boeing Computer Services and the computer simulation used to assess system performance on specified driving cycles based on actual vehicle operating data. The simulation produces detailed data on power demands, torque loadings, electrical parameters and vehicle performance on a second by second basis, together with overall values for fuel consumption and battery depletion. The BBC based scheme described has obvious limits in terms of operating speed, number of channels available for both data loging and output control. The program is written in a combination of Basic and Machine Code languages and is adequate for controlling the test rig in a flexible manner.
