Aerospace LAN applications vary from those of the typical earth-bound LANs, requiring modular fault tolerance, deterministic data delivery, low power, high performance (minimum delay), extensive integrity, and test flexibility. A 100-Mb/s fiber-optic star topology system, which demonstrates many of these features, is summarized and data is provided. System operation enhancements, such as priority transfer and embedded time distribution, are noted. Expanded topology through the use of distributed star couplers, which allow the network to be segmentable to support the integration of separate spacecraft sections/end items, is described. The integration and test features are discussed. The extent of the power savings due to power-strobing techniques and choice of access protocol on a candidate LAN implementation is demonstrated by analysis. A fligth version of a star bus interface unit design is used in the analysis to compare with an FDDI LAN approach.
