The demand for fault-tolerant aircraft electrical power systems has been highlighted by the Fault-Tolerant Electrical Power System (FTEPS) study sponsored by Aeronautical Systems Divisions Wright Aeronautical Labs (AFWAL). This paper illustrates an approach taken by McDonnell Douglas Corporation, St. Louis, Missouri and Sundstrand Corporation, Rockford, Illinois to arrive at a conceptual design for such a system. The FTEPS specification served as the starting point for this work. From this, a set of design rules was developed to guide the study. These rules and the subsequent generation, distribution, and control system trade studies are discussed, with an architecture proposed for further study and design work. Key issues addressed include number and rating of generators, cross-shafting, distribution architecture for both ac and dc feeders, load management system architecture and control, reliability aspects, and system parameter ranking.
