The asynchronous squirrel-cage motor has always been considered ideal for traction purposes. However, the inevitable frequency conversion equipment, the inverter, has been commercially reasonable only since the mid seventies. The progress in power semiconductors and inverter control have been crucial for the break-through. Though the control equations were difficult to implement with analog circuits, good results were achieved in Helsinki metro, Rotterdam light rail vehicles and elsewhere. In recent years more and more analog functions have been replaced by digital circuits and microprocessors. This has led to a totally digital control system, which was used for the first time in the Finnish State Railway's Dr 16 locomotive and later in the Series 3000 railcar of the State Transport Authority of South Australia. Though the digital control does much the same tasks as its analog predecessor, the operational principles and strategies are totally different in some cases.
