Analysis of accident statistics involving off-highway vehicles repeatedly shows a high proportion due to vehicles reversing and involving momentary carelessness by the driver. Operators have a statutory duty to adopt a safe method of work and most machines are fitted with audible reverse warnings, mirrors and some even have closed circuit television. However, the repetitious nature of most off-highway operations breeds carelessness on the part of both the vehicle drivers and other workers in the vicinity. There is, therefore, a clear need for an automatic system which will stop the machine when a collision is imminent. Such a system needs a suitable sensing mechanism and also needs to be designed to suit the construction, quarrying and mining environment. It must also be designed to interface with a wide variety of equipment in a manner which can be handled by mobile plant fitters on site. The Ogden Group of Companies of Otley, Yorkshire, who have extensive experience of the operation and maintenance of mobile plant in these industries, established Odgen Electronics to develop such a system.
