Calculations of induced voltage and noise voltage in metallic communications cables have traditionally been undertaken using relatively simple methods based upon the explicit solution of transmission line equations. These methods were generally developed about 40 years ago with emphasis on AC railways using direct rail return, for communications cables which had metallic outer sheats in continuous contact with the ground. This paper reviews the limitations of this classical approach, and introduces an alternative computer-based numerical method for undertaking such calculations. This permits a realistic representation of the power system using auto-transformers, booster transformers or direct rail-return, as well as a means of calculating accurate longitudinal and psophometric voltages with the point connected earth-rod arrangements commonly used to provide electromagnetic screening.
