Third world economies require vehicles with good fuel efficiency in congested traffic. Power requirements are usually relatively low. High speed travel capability, however, is also necessary since some improved roadways will be available. A system is designed in this paper satisfying these requirements using low cost components and a medium speed flywheel which will allow the engine to run in an 'on-off' high efficiency mode. Regenerative braking is included. The transmission system has only one gear set and a rubber V-belt for simplicity. Fuel economy and performance results are obtained using the U.S. EPA cycle and the New York city cycle as design standards. It is shown that 80 MPG for a 1850 LB and 57 MPG for a 3000 LB vehicle is possible for city driving. The results are compared with a standard transmission vehicle. In very crowded city driving the vehicles can go three to four times further than a conventional transmission vehicle on a unit of fuel.
