Recent array design changes have led to the need for thinner, larger space cells. This has necessitated modifications in cell processing and handling, to increase mechanical yields, while still meeting the electrical, thermal and radiation requirements. By careful analysis of the possible sources of increased breakage, improved methods for fixturing have been developed, along with improved handling and processing procedures for large, thin slices. These modified methods have been extended to use on production lines with satisfactory increase of mechanical yields. The changes were evolutionary, and were readily assimilated into existing production facilities. Thus the electrical thermal and radiation advantages of larger, thinner cells can be exploited to upgrade array performance.
