Over the past half decade optical 3-D coordinate measurement techniques have gained a significant foothold in the aerospace manufacturing sector in the U.S. At the outset, manually operated digital theodolite and photogrammetry systems were introduced primarily for dimensional inspection in quality assurance and tooling. Two of the advantages of these systems over conventional optics and gauging were quite significant: the relatively fast measurement time and direct measurement within a 3-D reference frame thus affording an interface to CAD/CAM databases. In the ongoing quest for increased productivity, automated theodolite and photogrammetry systems have been implemented over the past few years, and measurement systems based on scanning laser ranging have been developed more recently. Even newer technologies such as time-constrained digital photogrammetric systems seem poissed to enter the industrial measurement arena. In this paper, the current status of optical 3-D coordinate measurement in the U.S. aerospace industry is discussed and prospects for the future are considered.
