This paper focuses on the area of human factors design issues for computer-assisted command and control of robotic vehicles, platforms, mission modules, and manipulators for the military user community. It reviews the continuous work in progress at the U.S. Army Human Engineering Laboratory (HEL) to define optimal control and display configurations for remote operations in hostile environments. Topics covered include work in displays for remote manipulation and platform driving, data compression issues related to the presentation of visual information in a low data rate environment, and computer simulation of tracking and other performance tasks for prediction of operator performance. Examples are presented from HEL's technology base research program to illustrate the issues being investigated.
