In this paper we report an evaluation of the loss induced in PM fibers by low dose rate (< 1 rad/h) irradiations, and we have determined that the radiation response vaires from < 0.4 to about 6 Db/km-krad, depending on the wavelength of measurement and the fiber. The 'permanent' induced loss determined by fitting the recovery of the induced loss following high dose rate exposure to nth-order kinetics has been shown to be a valid predictor of the low dose rate response; both 0.85 and 1.3 micron PM fibers have been found which show virtually no permanent incremental loss and would therefore appear to be resistant to low dose rate radiation environments. In addition, we have explicitly measured the differential incremental attenuations of light travelling in the two orthogonal polarization axes induced by both steady state 60.Co and pulsed electron irradiations. Significant differential attenuation was only evident at high doses and short times.
