The paper describes the hardware and system development which has taken place at British Aerospace, Warton, England, to evaluate the use of 94 GHz radar for the autonomous detection of targets in all clutter backgrounds. The work followed on from future weapon system studies, performed in the mid-1970's. The goal was to identify target discriminants and effective classification algorithms. The aquisition of measurement radars over the last 10 years has allowed us to collect data from targets (tanks, APC's, etc.) and clutter. The radars have varied in capability from a simple solid-state, pulsed IMPATT, non-coherent, dual receiver channel, frequency/polarisation/pulse-width-agile system. Airborne radars have been built at Warton and flown under a Twin Pioneer aircraft. These radars (two versions) have been a solid-state, dual channel, fixed beam and a full scanning, non coherent, dual channel, higher power system. A demonstrator radar is currently being built, which incorporates many of the functions which have been identified as providing good target discrimination.
