This paper begins with a short review of early work carried out in fibre optic communications for avionic architectures leading to the optical 1553 development. The current status of this and the results of flight tests in a rotary wing aircraft will be outlined. The paper goes on to describe current activities of RAE and STL/STC in progressing networks and components for avionic architectures highlighting the rapidly growing acceptance of fibre optics in aircraft. Both active and passive components will be discussed in relation to the needs of the aircraft environment. The paper concludes with a look at work on new components such as silica on silicon devices and optical crossbar elements that may add new dimensions to avionic fibre systems.
