In recent years the number of electronic control systems fitted to road vehicles has increased significantly. A luxury car may now contain up to thirty electronic systems and it has been estimated that electronics will account for up to 30 % of the value of even a medium sized family saloon by the year 2000. There are many reasons for the dramatic increase in vehicular electronics, with factors such as environment, safety, legislation and refinement being influential. The introduction of concepts such as road transport informatics will also lead to a substantial growth in 'on board' automotive electronics. The most basic vehicular electronic systems may be elementary circuits such as an interior light delay. However, many microprocessor-based systems with complex embedded software are now being fitted. These electronic control systems are often employed in safety-critical applications, such as engine management, anti-lock braking and supplemental restraints. This paper will examine some of the issues involved in ensuring the reliability of software, with particular reference to the development in the UK of guidelines for the application of software to vehicles.
