Traditionally, requirements placed on battery manufacturers for reliability and maintainability predictions have been inappropriate. All too often, specification, design and data requirements have been 'Boiler Plate' requirements from electronics/avionics documentation without regard to the basic differences of these products. Standards such as operational hours and flight hours to determine mean time between failure, removal or maintenance are imposed without regard to the actual cycling requirements of the battery. Actual cycling requirements are rarely contained in the specification or statement of work to which the battery manufacturer must respond. The system aspect of the relationship with the available charging system is also rarely considered.
