A brief overview of two ongoing expert systems research projects and future directions for research and development at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are presented. The first project involves the incorporation of an expert system into an inductive loop tester (hardware for the diagnosis and analysis of loop and detector systems) to analyze and simply represent the condition and status of the inductive loop system and to recommend actions. The second project involves the verification, validation and evaluation of expert systems. Approaches being incorporated into an FHWA developed guide are described.
