Super high-speed rotary machines have been getting popular in recent years to improve productivity as well as reduce the size, weight, and installation space required. Use of a multiplying gear in combination with a general-purpose rotary machine has generally been adopted so far, but the multiplying gear is likely to cause such problems as vibration, noise, and temperature rise due to friction when the speed increases. Because adoption of the multiplying mechanism requires a full examination of the overall operating performance of the machine and related mechanisms, super-high-speed rotary electric machines not requiring a multiplying gear have been attracting attention in recent years. As a result of research and development efforts over several years we have succeeded in developing a super-high-speed rotary machine (30 kW, 86 000 rpm) to satisfy such requirements. A general description is given here while introducing the development and applications of general super-high-speed rotary electric machines.
