The high sales quantities of more than 9 Millions units until 1994 and the still more promising forecast illustrate the importance of CAN as a protocol in fieldbus and sensor/actuator bus applications. The historical evolution of CAN until today is discussed, giving the reasons for the big success of CAN. The technical characteristics of today's CAN systems are analyzed and explained. Prognosis is given how and where CAN systems might go in the future. There is a need for better and easier system design capabilities in real-time critical applications. A more uniform and more simplified approach for system design, even independent from the existing CAN OSI-layer-7-implementations might be desired. A possible solution for that may be derived from the 'virtual commonly shared memory'-model in conjunction with the 'shared variables'-concept. One additional extension to the already extended variables is required, taking into account the constraints coming from the real-time requirements of the intended application system. Each variable definition is enhanced by a set of attributes reflecting these timing requirements, such as 'Access Time Required'. This attribute, among others will be used by an Enhanced System Builder tool to find out about how the communication of the related variable must be done: as local I/O, remote-dedicated line I/O or networked I/O.
