In recent years, the technology of image processing has more and more been used in the applications of Intelligent Transportation Systems for vehicle detection, vehicle classification, traffic flow estimation, incident detection, toll purpose, road and view condition analysis, visual navigation, collision avoidance and etc. In this survey, the authors try to find out in what sense the techniques of image processing are used in intelligent transportation systems. First, the authors investigated the requirement of the intelligent transportation systems for image processing. Then, the authors recalled the basic techniques of image processing that often used in the intelligent transportation systems. Finally, the authors show some examples of application systems that used the techniques of image processing for detection, estimation and other ITS applications.
