At low frequency the magnetic field in the vicinity of the conductors has been successfully estimated using finite element techniques. Where discrepancies are found explanations have been proposed in terms of standing wave effects not currently included in the model. At higher frequencies the finite length of track and the separation of the rails and catenary will become large, in terms of wavelength. The structure can then be expected to behave like an open transmission line, and ultimately as a travelling wave antenna, with the potential to excite additional discrete propagating modes, surface waves and a radiation field. These effects will further complicate both measurement and analysis. Effects associated with peripheral structures associated with the catenary are also likely to become significant as the frequency increases. Further experimental and theoretical work to extend the frequency range under investigation is continuing.
