Automotive navigation based on the Global Positioning System (GPS) calls for a low-cost gyroscope capable of temporarily supplementing the inertial data when the r.f. signal is fading, such as in tunnels, indoor parkings and strongly pertubed urban areas. Such device is also a key component in navigation systems based on a map-matching algorithm, which corrects the motion sensor outputs using the geographical information stored in a CD-ROM. In this paper, the specifications of a rotating sensor for automotive navigation are outlined; in a second step the paper focusses on electrooptical gyroscopes, considering different approaches to the design of low-cost units. Finally, a 3X3 fiberoptic gyro prototype which has been built in the laboratory using telecommunication components will be presented. It will be shown that it this technology is suitable for car navigation.
