This paper discusses the generation of filtered attitude estimates using star-camera data. Previous work has developed a techniquc for robust, rapid identification of large numbers of stars with minimal on-line storage and processing requirements. Here, star identification is demonstrated from real ground-based star-camera imagery, identifying star patterns from a high accuracy, narrow field-of-view star camera. The approach requires no a priori attitude knowlecdge and suggests a capahility of monitoring and acquiring stars in real-time operation. A new non-linear attitude filter similar to an extended Kalman filter is applied to process star location and the associated identification data. The highcst accuracy pointing requirements are obtained by filtering multiple sequences of star data to obtain a single time-evolving estimate of celestial attitude. The prototype system represents a step in the development of a new generation of single instrument, high accuracy attitude determination systems.
