A baseline framework (AMPES) for mission automation adaptable for various air mission tasks, defensive or offensive, is described. The system will use multiple methodologies combining traditional numeric optimization techniques for mission planning, geometric algorithms and a knowledge-based approach. A situation assessment module will choose the best-suited algorithm from a pool of application-specific algorithms for the encountered situation, depending on the response time required, and computational resource available. Human tactical expertise will be encoded in the mission knowledge base to give general guidelines while the real computation still depends on various kinds of optimization algorithms.
