The US Navy's Tomahawk cruise missile employs two types of guidance systems that enable conventional and nuclear payloads to be delivered over long distances. The missile's design features a forward module that contains the guidance system and warhead, with the aft body housing a turbofan cruise jet engine. All Tomahawk launches are propelled by a rocket booster attached to the tail cone that pushes the missile from its platform to a sufficient speed and altitude for its turbofan engine to sustain cruise flight. In guiding missiles over land, the autonomous guidance system uses terrain contour matching, for comparing continuously sensed elevation below the missile, with stored data employed in an onboard computer.
