When oil wells no longer free-flow and water production increases, some form of artificial lift is required to extract the crude oil. The electrical submersible pump (ESP) is just one of many artificial lift techniques which can be employed, and their use to increase the recoverable reserves in North Sea oil fields is becoming more widespread. There has previously been very little written that addresses the problems concerning the electrical engineer, and this article, which details some of the experiences and concerns of one oil field operator, describes common-mode failures and the associated problems encountered with surface and sub-sea electrical equipment.
