The battlefield sensor simulator (BSS) is a facility for very high resolution simulation of the performance of sensors on the battlefield and has been particularly conceived to evaluate the sensor fusion and communication aspects of that performance. The facility, as described, is a large, transputer-based processing system designed to handle the movements of the objects on the battlefield, the sensors observing them and the processes necessary to determine which sensors see which targets and with what signal-to-noise ratio. The paper addresses the design approach, the tools used in the design process and the current stage of the implementation of that design. The system in its present form has over 100 processors, 250 MBytes of RAM, and several GBytes of both tape and disc memory. It has a nominal processing power of about 1000 transputer RISC MIPS.
