Direct energy weapons (DEWs) generally fall into three categories: lasers, radio-frequency/microwave energy weapons, and charged particle beams. Microwave and RF weapons could potentially exploit three effects. First, they could be used to overpower enemy communications and radar systems. Second, if enough power were generated, they could literally destroy the microcircuits in enemy electronic systems. Third, they could heat up a target using the same principle as a household microwave oven. Most approaches to generating particle beams use linear induction accelerators or derivations thereof.
