The traditional role of the industrial engineer (IE) has been in the areas of work measurement and methods analysis. Optimum efficiency has been the underlying goal. The study of a single machine requires a simple straight forward approach. However, the IE's task becomes much more complex when addressing an assembly line analysis. The activity at each station has a direct effect on every element in the line. These elements include: machines, conveyors, buffers, manpower, and ultimately, pieces. Every new change to the process, will trigger an entirely new set of conditions. Solving one problem may create several others. A great possibility exists that these new problems will not be found until after the fact, causing confusion and additional cost. The author describes how TRW used computer simulation modelling to quickly view ideas and head off any new problems.
