Modern public urban transport systems are evolving rapidly to meet the objectives of increased service, improved cost effectiveness and minimal pollution. Under these conditions automatic monorails have significant advantages as long as tightly controlled train movements and passenger safety can be guaranteed. This places stringent demands on the control system architecture, for which there are currently two different philosophies. The first architecture originated in the classical railway system and makes train safety the responsibility of the infrastructure, that is, of the track and the control centres. The second originated in industrial control systems and makes each train responsible for its own safety. The control system architecture of the world's first fully automatic, commercial, urban transport monorail is described.
