The vulnerability of expensive platforms to modern missile seeker technology is driving the development of new expendable countermeasures. Today's missile threats cover the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and future missiles will incorporate sophisticated multi-mode trackers. Successful off-board expendable countermeasures must exploit the same technologies to enhance combat survivability. To be effective, off-board expendables-chaff, flares and active decoys-must be convincing targets for missile seekers. Metalized chaff particles float in the air to confuse RF-guided missiles. Rapidly burning flares attract infrared (IR)-guided missiles, and towed, launched or free-flying decoys are designed to meet a range or specific spectral threats. Meanwhile, researchers are pursuing multispectral decoys, which combine RF, IR and electro-optical (EO) threat detection into a single expendable.
