Design of a nondevelopment item (NDI) multifunctional military computer is subject to an increased number of constraints over previously designed specific application hardware. The ability to appeal to a wide variety of potential customers is dependent as much on environmental functionality as computer processing ability. The best architecture will be of little use if the computer cannot meet the environmental specifications required. The authors discuss the key mechanical design considerations that must be addressed in order to effectively produce an NDI off-the-shelf military computer system. The broad-range military environment makes selection of a set of environmental specifications for an NDI product difficult, at best. This selection greatly influences the engineering design activity and final product manufacturing costs.
