The maglev transport system with a short-stator drive is supported and propelled with a magnetic wheel in which electromagnets and a single-sided linear induction motor (SLIM) are integrated in a frame. The lateral displacement of a SLIM is studied theoretically and experimentally. The characteristics of the linear motor under the lateral displacement is calculated using Fourier series method. A theoretical basis to evaluate the lateral motion of a SLIM is then established, and the influence of the lateral displacement of the SLIM with respect to the rail is quantified. If the proposed method is adopted for the design optimization of the SLIM and the reaction rail and if a low slip frequency control scheme is used, then the side force of the SLIM will become the stabilizing force.
