Ariane 4 is the highest performance and newest model of the Ariane European Launcher Family. The necessity of a more flexible performance capability required the design of larger Solid Boosters (9.5 Metric tons of propellant each compared with 7.3 of the Ariane 3). These Boosters can be installed onto the Launcher in numbers of 2 or 4 or in combination with other additional Liquid Boosters giving a maximum payload capability of 4300 kg placed into geomstationary transfer orbits. The Solid Booster, which provides a Total Impulse of 22000 kNs with a maximum thrust of 745 kN, has been developed and qualified at SNIA-BPD, Defence and Space Division, Colleferro - Italy. The program started in January 1983 and the qualification phase was successfully completed in September 1985. This paper presents the configuration of the motor, and describes the design approach. Specifically discussed is the utilization of the acquired Ariane 3 experience and test results applied to the final Ariane 4 Solud Booster configuration with miniumum modifications, thus allowing a cost effective program. Details of the development and qualification test results are also presented.
